Hotel l'Aigle d'Or in Thiers

Establishment more than a century old in the city of Thiers built in 1835 on the site of another establishment which was baptized in memory of Napoleon's visit to Thiers. ….hence its name of the Golden Eagle

A former post house on the road from Clermont-Ferrand to Lyon, this establishment was inhabited by George Sand during the writing of her novel “La ville noire” and also by her friend Balzac.

Other no less illustrious figures in the 1950s also frequented this establishment.

George Sand

George Sand (1804-1876) "- Why are you sad, my comrade? What are you unhappy about? You are young and strong, you have no father or mother, wife or children, leaving none of yours in pain. You work fast and well. You never run out of work. No one here blames you for not being from the country. On the contrary, you are esteemed for your conduct and your talents, because you are educated for a worker: you know how to read, write andcount almost as well as a clerk. You have wit and reason, and to top it off, you're the prettiest man in town. Finally you are twenty-four years old, a beautiful age! So what do you need, and why, instead of coming for a walkand chat with us on Sundays, do you stand aside, as if you did not believe yourself equal to the others,or as if you did not consider them worthy of you? So spoke Louis Gaucher, the cutler worker,to Etienne Lavoute, known as Sept-Epées, the cutler-armor. They were seated in the sun, in front of aof the five or six hundred factories crowding and intermingling on the two banks of the torrent, at the place called the Trou-d'Enfer.To hear each other speak at the edge of this violent and superb waterfall, they needed the habit they had of seizing human speech through the continual noise of hammers, the shrill cries of tools and the hissing of the furnace." Etienne, known as Sept-Epée, was a young cutler, among many others,of the Black City.?He has the ambition to rise because he is a good worker. Sept-Epée also loves the young paper worker Tonine who has the desire to relieve her neighbors. But he is afraid of marriage, which might shatter his dreams...
